New Smyrna Beach Airport (EVB)

The Flight Team practices flight events at nearby New Smyrna Beach airport, a busy non-towered field. For each aircraft in the pattern, Flight Team members on the ground observe pattern operations and monitor the CTAF on a hand-held tranceiver. Team members adhere strictly to courteous operations -- even at the expense of go-rounds -- to help insure safe operations at EVB. Team members are proactive about advising inbound pilots of runway in use and number of aircraft in the pattern. Team members are also proactive in advising errant pilots who call up for the DeLand Airport of the proper frequency to use.

DeLand Municipal Airport (DED)

A Flight Team hazard analysis of operations at this airport may have helped lead to a much-needed CTAF change at this non-towered field. This report was submitted to the NTSB investigator in charge of investigating the December, 1999, midair collision at DED. A copy of the hazard analysis can be obtained from the Safety Officer, and an online version of this report will be available soon.

FOD Cleanup: F/A-18 Fly-in at DAB
On Friday, March 23, 2001, nearly 30 members of the Flight Team took up FOD duty on the Daytona Beach Airport ramp and runways to help insure that visiting F/A-18 Hornets were not subjected to debris. As it turns out, one F/A-18 pilot was a former Flight Team member.
Young Eagles
The Eagles Flight Team enjoyed the opportunity to create memories for
some 80 kids on Saturday, November 4, 2000, at the Experimental Aircraft Association’s (EAA) Wings ‘n Things event for the Young Eagles program. Eight team members brought two Cadets and a Cessna to Lakeland, FL, to join other EAA volunteer pilots for the event. In addition to flying the kids around the pattern, Flight Team members provided each with a hands-on preflight experience that included a lesson in propeller safety. An online report of this event will be available soon.
Girl Scout Aeronautical Merit Badge Program

At the November 4, 2000, EAA Wings ‘n Things event, the Flight Team also participated in a Merit Badge program for approximately 100 Girl Scouts. The program, presented by Peggy Chabrian of the new chapter at ERAU of Women in Aviation International, enabled the Girl Scouts to meet the requirements for their Aeronautical Merit Badge. Some of the activities included a paper airplane contest to demonstrate the effectiveness of various structural designs, lectures on airfoils and aerodynamics, a hands-on demonstration of various aircraft types and their specific capabilities, discussions on aviation careers, videos about famous women in the aviation and space industries, and a hands-on preflight demonstration with Chabrian’s homebuilt aircraft.
AOPA Town Meeting and Air Safety Foundation Seminar

The Flight Team is pleased to have contributed to the record attendance at the AOPA Town Meeting held in Daytona Beach in the Fall Semester. More than 30 members attended the meeting, hosted by AOPA President Phil Boyer.

Further, when the AOPA's Air Safety Foundation presented a Safety Seminar on Midair Collisions in the Spring, ERAU's Aviation Safety Manager and Chief Air Safety Investigator Grant Brophy called upon the Flight Team to help boost attendance. Twenty-nine team members showed up to attend the seminar and were pleasantly surprised when host Brophy verbally thanked the Eagles Flight Team in front of the assembly before introducing the key speaker!
